MEADOWS — Hood River Valley’s (HRV) boys ski team moved into a first-place tie with Sandy in the Mt. Hood Ski Racing League after the Feb. 1 giant slalom competition at Mt. Hood Meadows.
Skiers traversed two runs over Middle Fork at Meadows, where HRV’s Lars Welch edged Sandy’s Grant Messinger for the fastest two-run time of the day. Welch had runs of 50.90 seconds and 53.31 (combined 1 minute, 44.21 seconds). Messinger went 50.42 and 54.2 for 1:44.62.
Teamwise, Hood River edged Sandy by two seconds in the combined scoring that includes the fastest three times from each of the two runs. HRV and Sandy have two team wins and two second-place finishes apiece — four races into the six-race season. Also figuring in the boys team scoring for HRV were Eaton Beckett, with runs of 53.97 (fourth best) and 57.42 (seventh); Jaden Johnson, with a 59.07; and Davis Pruder (1:01.0).
Trout Lake’s Rowan Shuman didn’t complete his first run, but his second run of 56.15 seconds was the third fastest overall.
In girls competition, Grant High continues to lead the team standings and Hood River’s Emily Teets paces the individual results. Teets had the two fastest times in each of Saturday’s two runs and posted a combined time of 1:44.56. Teammate Arlie Sparling had the sixth fastest time of the first run of 55.42, but did not complete her second run. Zoe Mortenson’s combined two runs placed her seventh overall at 1:57.05.
The Dalles was led by Kaiya Doty, who was sixth overall at 1:53.99. Trout Lake’s Shuman had the fourth-fastest second run of the day at 58.12, but she did not finish her first run.
