THE GORGE — The defending Big Sky League boys basketball champion Dufur High Rangers began their 14-game league schedule with two wins last week.
The Rangers (2-0 league, 6-3 overall) won their Jan. 3 league opener at home 50-39 over the South Wasco County High Redsides (1-1 league, 8-3 overall). Senior Jacob Kent led the way in scoring with 22 points. South Wasco junior Jason Hull scored 22 points.
The Rangers followed with a 63-29 road win Jan. 4 over the Lyle/Wishram High Cougars (0-1 league, 3-5 overall). Three players scored in double figures for Dufur, including Bryson Cates (14 points), Nolan Cates (12) and Kent (11). Junior Carson Ramsay led the Cougars in scoring with 12 points.
South Wasco bounced back from the loss to Dufur and won 61-54 at home Jan. 4 over the Horizon Christian High Hawks (1-1 league, 2-5 overall). Jason Hull scored 31 and senior Gavin Hagan had 13. It was a one-possession game with 90 seconds remaining. South Wasco outscored Horizon 19-10 in the fourth quarter when Hull scored 16 points. Horizon was led by junior Ben Chapman, who scored 30 points, and sophomore Tyler Abbott who added 15.
The Hawks won their league opener Jan. 3 at home, 61-22, over the Trout Lake High Mustangs (1-1 league, 1-8 overall). Chapman led Horizon with 21 points and Abbott scored 11.
