SHERMAN CO. —Sherman County won for the second time in three weeks, 44-12, in a Special District 3 eight-man football home victory over Perrydale.
It was the largest margin of victory this season for the Huskies, guided by fifth-year Coach Kyle Blagg.
“Everyone played hard and I’m proud of how they performed,” said Blagg. “We made some early mistakes, but we kind of worked our way through them.”
The Huskies play their next contest Friday in a 7 p.m. homecoming event versus Country Christian at Sherman High in Moro.
“We’re in a good spot in the standings in regards to the playoffs,” said Blagg, who is hoping to lead the Huskies to the playoffs for the first time since 2022.
Redsides wins again
The No. 4-ranked South Wasco County Redsides (4-0 SD1, 6-2 overall) captured a fourth straight victory in Class 1A Special District 1 six-man football, 32-28, at previously undefeated Prairie City (7-1 overall, 3-1 SD1).
The Redsides, guided by sixth-year Coach Mike Waine and assistant Coach Michael Carter, scored with one second remaining to get the win in the see-saw contest. Redsides’ senior quarterback Storm McCoy (20-for-40, 314 yards passing, three touchdowns) threw a fourth down, 27-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Hagin (10 catches, 184 yards receiving, three touchdowns) for the game-winning score, capping a 75-yard scoring drive.
“Storm played an incredible game, while riding the highs and lows in such a big game, he was able to settle down and work hard to help lead us to the win,” said Waine. “Nick Packard played an outstanding game, too, as he contributed to our success with his blocking on the offensive line. Not only was our passing game dominant, but our running game was very productive, as well.”
George Barnett (11 carries, 100 yards rushing, touchdown), Hagan (nine carries, 116 yards rushing, touchdown) and McCoy (two carries, 15 yards rushing) helped the Redsides outgain the Panthers in total offense, 572 to 270.
South Wasco will play a first-round state playoff game Nov. 8 versus a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
