The Hood River Valley High Eagles girls golf team competed in their final home event this year in an Northwest Oregon Conference six-team tournament April 29 at Indian Creek Golf Course in Hood River.
The Eagles, guided by first-year Coach Mark Bauman, took third place with a team score of 436 on a rainy, windy, and cold day in the Columbia Gorge.
“We took third place and we beat Canby by 36 shots, which was great and it’s the first time we beat them this year, so it was nice to get a solid third place finish in the NWOC,” said Bauman. “The girls played really well in some really tough conditions, and it was over a five-hour round, which is not normal for our team. It wasn’t our best score, but on this type of course, it really was one of the better rounds that we’ve had. They were able to pull through it though and everyone played really well … now we’re preparing for the regional.”
The Eagles were led by 2023 5A state tournament qualifier senior Sierra Muenzer, who shot a team-leading 101. Muenzer was followed by Kristen Fox (103), Peyton Sherrell (116), and Juliana Moore (116). Kaia Grasa shot a non-counting team score of 132 for HRV.
“Nobody shot any PRs, but team-wise, they all played really well to secure third place,” said Bauman. “There’s some short and lower par courses that we play on in NWOC events, so of course we’ll have lower scores at those particular events,” said Bauman. “I’m really proud of how the girls have developed as a team over the past eight weeks.”
The Eagles will compete in their next event May 7 in the Intermountain Conference/NWOC Regional Tournament at Aspen Lakes Golf Club in Sisters. The top-two teams will qualify for the 5A state tourney May 13-14 at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis. The top-five individuals who are not members of the top two teams will also qualify for state.
“Some of the girls have played on that course and they’re familiar with it, so hopefully we’ll have good weather there. They’re really come around as a team; they’ve built good team camaraderie and everyone has really started playing good golf at the end of the season. If we’re unable to qualify for state as a team, I think our top-two, Sierra and Kristin, have a good shot to qualify individually,” Bauman said.
