Hood River Valley tuned up for the 2023 Northwest Oregon Conference district cross country meet Oct. 19 by competing in the Happy Hustle race in Corvallis.
Coach Brandon Bertram’s Eagles will attempt to defend their 2022 girls NWOC title on Oct. 25 at Champoeg State Park. Hood River’s girls team is ranked second in the NWOC to La Salle Prep in the hypothetical race breakdown (athletic.net) based on times this season. The Eagles boys are second to Wilsonville.
La Salle, HRV, Wilsonville and Putnam are the frontrunners for the NWOC’s two girls team automatic qualifying berths into the 2023 state meet. The first three schools and Canby are the NWOC top boys teams. In addition to the top two boys and girls teams qualifying for state, five additional Class 5A teams will be selected as at-large qualifiers.
As of last week, the Hood River boys were ranked eighth statewide among 5A schools and the girls were ranked 15th.
At the Happy Hustle meet in Corvallis, the HRV boys were second to Corvallis over the 5,000-meter course. Kai Wagner and Logan King led the way for the Eagles by finishing third and fourth overall, while teammate Sam Knoll was sixth. Also among the team scorers for HRV were Victor Coffman in 12th and Davis Kerr in 14th. Wagner, Knoll, and Kerr each had personal bests.
On the girls side, HRV was led by sophomore Syl Perrin, who was fourth in 19 minutes, 22 seconds, a 30-second personal best. The Eagles were fourth as a team, as well.
Hood River’s girls team won the 2022 NWOC championship in the school’s first season in the conference. The HRV boys were second.
The Hood River girls have the sixth-longest Oregon active streak of consecutive years of qualifying for the state meet — 12 successive seasons. HRV will attempt to win its eighth successive district team title, and 11th in the past 12 seasons. The Eagles won those seven district crowns in three different conferences: Columbia River, 2016 and 2017, Intermountain, 2018 through 2021, and NWOC in 2022.
