The win and final score were distinct turnarounds from last season for the Eagles, who lost their 2024 dual to the Cougars, 102-68. In that meet, Canby won six of eight individual races. Last week, the teams split wins in the eight individual events, Canby won two of three relays, but HRV had slightly better team depth overall which enabled it to pull out the close win. Hood River had six second-place finishes, compared to the two from Canby.
The Eagle individual wins came from Sophia Cross in the 200- and 100-meter freestyle races. She led a 1-2-3 HRV sweep in the longer race, with teammates Nyxey Heredia and Maya Arndt finishing second and third. In the 100 free, HRV’s Ava Giordana was second to Cross. Arndt won the 400 freestyle, and teammate Delaney Hackett won the 100 backstroke.
Hood River’s girls relay win came in the 200 freestyle, as Heredia, Hackett, Giordano, and Cross swam the race in 2 minutes, 6.93 seconds.
Giordano had a second-place effort in the 50 free (30.86); Kylin Elliott was second in the 200 individual medley; Hackett was second in the 100 butterfly; and Elliott and Isabel Ulland went 2-3 in the 100 breaststroke.
The Hood River boys lost 97-54 to the Cougars. The Eagles won two events, the 200 free relay and the 100 breaststroke. Felipe Mendez won the individual race in 1:17.04. He anchored the relay win, capping the efforts from Francisco Solberg, Liam McGeeney, and Maxwell Webster. Solberg was second in the 100 backstroke; Mendez was second in the 400 free; Kane Wagner was second in the 100 free; and McGeeney and Charlie Marcotte went 2-3 in the 100 butterfly.
The Eagles have one more NWOC meet — Feb. 6 at Hood River Aquatic Center — against Centennial and Milwaukie before continuing to taper for the Feb. 14-15 district meet at Parkrose High.
