The Class 5A Hood River Valley High Eagles got a split of two non-league boys basketball games recently in the Happy Rock Holiday Tournament at Gladstone High School.
The Eagles (4-2) won, 64-49, over the Class 4A Molalla High Indians (2-7) on Dec. 18, and a day later they lost to host Gladstone, 56-54.
Against Molalla, the Eagles built a 13-9 first-quarter advantage and then outscored the Indians 22-15 in the second to take a 35-24 halftime lead. The Eagles had a balanced offensive attack with nine players scoring, led by a trio of double-digit scorers: Sawyer Clemett (16 points), Matthew Fauth (12 points) and senior guard Ethan Rivera (10 points).
The Eagles followed the next day with a 56-54 loss to Gladstone. HRV played strong defensively in the first half, while building a 19-14 halftime advantage. The Gladiators responded by outscoring the Eagles, 42-35, in a high scoring second half to pull out the victory. Smith (16 points) led HRV in scoring.
“We had our chances to win against Gladstone at the end,” said HRV Coach Christopher Dirks. “We really struggled to make shots and sometimes that happens. We played very well versus Molalla, and we were much more physical, too, in that game.”
Following nine days off for Christmas break, the Eagles resume their schedule with their final non-league game of the season, Dec. 28 at 3 p.m. versus the Lebanon High Warriors (2-4) at Hood River Valley High School.
“Having the time off is always a good thing this time of the year and it gives us a little time to prepare,” Dirks said.
