The No. 12-ranked Hood River Valley Eagles enjoyed tremendous success last week in OSAA Class 5A softball, as they won two Northwest Oregon Conference games — in come-from-behind fashion — to stay in contention for the league title.
The Eagles (3-1 NWOC, 11-6 overall) recorded a thrilling come-from-behind 7-6 win in nine innings April 16 at home versus the Centennial High Eagles (2-4 NWOC, 8-6 overall). They also won from behind on April 19 at home against Wilsonville.
Against Centennial, trailing 6-2 after five innings, the Eagles responded with a two-out rally in the sixth inning to knot it 6-6. Gracyn Hanshaw (1-for-4) and Marina Castaneda (3-for-4, walk) each hit RBI singles and Kenadie Lucas (1-for-2) hit a two RBI double in the Eagles’ four-run offensive scoring burst to tie the game.
Following two scoreless innings, the Eagles pulled out the win in the bottom of the ninth inning. Castaneda and Addison Van Metre (1-for-4) hit singles. The Eagles then won the game Bryanna Alvarez (2-for-4) reached base on an error, while Castaneda sprinted home to score the game-winning run.
HRV junior hurler Grace Rowan had an outstanding performance, as she scattered eight hits and had 11 strikeouts with four walks. The Eagles had 11 hits.
HRV then recorded an impressive home win April 19 with a 4-3 home victory over the defending league champion Wilsonville High Wildcats (4-1 NWOC, 8-8 overall). HRV scored its tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Eagles entered this week tied for second place with the Putnam High Kingsmen (3-1 NWOC, 6-6 overall) in the nine-team league standings. HRV was scheduled to play April 23 at home versus Putnam. The Eagles play Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Canby (3-2 NWOC, 7-8 overall), followed by a 4 p.m. road game Friday at Hillsboro (2-2 NWOC, 10-4 overall).
