WHITE SALMON — Columbia High split its Trico Conference volleyball matches this past week, beating Fort Vancouver at home in straight sets on Sept. 24 before losing two days later at King’s Way Christian.
CHS (3-3 overall, 1-3 Trico), which completes the first go-around of league matches Oct. 8 at Stevenson (6-1, 3-1), was scheduled to host Kalama (5-3, 1-3) on Oct. 1 and play at Castle Rock (1-3, 1-5) on Oct. 3. The eight-team Trico is headed by La Center and King’s Way, both 4-0 in conference matches through September.
Against Fort Vancouver, the Bruins turned things around in the opening set after falling behind 7-3 to the visiting Trappers. Coach Heidi Shultz called a timeout, and her team responded with the next eight points. The stretch showcased the versatility of the Bruin team.
Fiona Grabb had a kill shot and then combined on a stuff block with Bella Hamilton. Kiana Chambers slammed down another kill and Columbia was within 7-6. Halle Kock, who served points five through 11, hit two tough serves in a row, the second an ace to give CHS an 8-7 lead.
Kock kept the next rally alive with a diving dig and following a Grabb kill shot, delivered another serve that Fort couldn’t handle cleanly. The Trappers called a timeout but could never regain the momentum, as Columbia won 25-18.
The final score in set No. 2 was similar — 25-19 — but Columbia did not trail. Hamilton served nine straight points after the Bruins earned a side out to give the home team a 10-0 lead. Fort twice closed within four points later in the set before the Bruins closed it out.
In the clinching set, outside of a 1-1 tie, Columbia led the entire way. Fort used a three-point burst to pull within 8-7, but Columbia scored 13 of the next 17 points to pull away to a comfortable lead.
King’s Way improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Trico with its straight-set win over Columbia in Vancouver on Sept. 26.
