WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High Bruins boys basketball team capped its season by advancing to the eight-team Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) District 4 playoffs for the first time in recent history.
The Bruins (13-10) then lost 66-50 to Tenino High on Feb. 19 to end their season.
The Bruins led 41-40 going into the fourth quarter. But the Beavers responded with a strong offensive surge in the final eight minutes, as they outscored the Bruins, 26-9, for the 16-point victory.
The Bruins led 2-0 top open the game, but soon found themselves down 17-6. Following a timeout, the Bruins fought back, trimming the margin to 17-11 at the end of the quarter on a layup in the lane by junior Mason Hamilton.
The Bruins gained some momentum in the third period, and they took a 35-34 lead midway through the quarter after junior Hunter Wang sank a 3-point field goal from the top of the arc. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter as the Bruins remained on top after three at 41-40.
The Beavers then took control of the game in fourth, in part because Hamilton, the team’s leading scorer, fouled out with 4:29 to play.
The contest marked the final game of the Columbia High School basketball career of seniors Huerta, Anthony Salcedo, Bryce Wang, Jaden Wang and Seth White.
