THE DALLES — Seemingly back on track, The Dalles High softball team has won four of its past five games and is tied for second in the Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) with a 4-2 record.
The Riverhawks opened conference play with a 9-5 loss against Crook County (9-6 overall, 4-2 TVC) on April 14, but rattled off three straight wins against the Cowgirls and a two-game sweep of Madras (2-12, 0-6), outscoring their opponents 38-2 over that span. Last week, The Dalles split two games against Gladstone (7-8, 5-1) on April 23 (a 7-2 loss) and April 24 (a 2-1 win).
Against Madras on April 21, junior Ava Graves was on fire at the plate. She was 3-for-3 and recorded five RBI. Eight Riverhawks recorded at least one hit.
Runs were hard to come by against Gladstone. The Riverhawks had five hits from Siyra Faulker, Hailey Johnston, Graves, Brock and May, but were only able to conjure two runs. The second game against the Gladiators went to extra innings tied 1-1 at the end of seven. Gladstone was up to bat in the top of the eighth inning, but went down in order, including Faulkner’s eighth strikeout to end the frame.
Newby led off the bottom half of the inning and reached base on a Gladiator error. She advanced to second on Graves’ bunt down the third-base line. Brock singled to left field and Newby scored to give The Dalles its fifth win of the season.
The Riverhawks will continue their hunt for another TVC championship with three games this week including a two-game series against Estacada (11-6, 3-3) on April 28 and April 30, and a May 2 home game against Molalla (7-7, 2-4).
