The old Umatilla House, landmark of the early days of Wasco county and known from Nome to San Francisco as a palatial hostelry of that time, may be sold under the sheriff’s hammer in satisfaction of a lien by Wasco County.
Under the name of Thomas Crofton, present owner of the building and site, the description of that property is given in a decree in foreclosure of tax liens, signed this morning by Judge Fred W. Wlson in the circuit court. Forty-four other delinquent in the 1922 tax payments are listed in the decree.
... History was made in the Umatilla House. Important conventions and conferences with the highest officials of the land took place in its now shabby confines, but once considered the finest in the west.
So important was the hotel in those days that it is often recalled that the railroad trains stopped at its front door to take on or discharge passengers, though the depot was half a mile further east. — The Dalles Daily Chronicle, May 1, 1924
