Mirror Lake Trail could have a new trailhead and parking area soon — the Mt. Hood National Forest Service and Federal Highway Administration are conducting an analysis of potential sites for development.
The Federal Highway Administration is looking into potential sites for a new parking lot and trailhead to Mirror Lake on the Mt. Hood National Forest.
As a popular hiking area on the west side of Mt. Hood, parking at the existing Mirror Lake trailhead on Hwy. 26 frequently fills up, forcing some visitors to park on the shoulders of the busy road. Safety concerns raised through a road safety audit and the recently completed Mt. Hood Multimodal Transportation Plan have identified this as a priority safety issue.
“The Forest Service takes the safety and enjoyment of visitors to the Mt. Hood National Forest very seriously. Off-road parking will ensure that trail users have a safe access to the area,” said Vicki Peterson, acting Zigzag District ranger.
The Highway Administration, in partnership with the Mt. Hood National Forest, will be hosting an Open House public meeting to discuss potential sites for a new Mirror Lake parking area and trailhead. The meeting will be held on Oct. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Zigzag Ranger District Office, 70220 E. Highway 26.
