THE DALLES — The Gorge Winds Concert Band (GWCB) recently received a Small Arts & Culture Grant of $3,000 through the Roy and Diane Marvin Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation.
The band has always operated on a shoestring budget, based largely on donations from concert attendees and band member dues. Due to COVID-19, the band was not able to rehearse or perform for more than a year, while expenses like storage rental and insurance increased, said a press release.
“The Oregon Community Foundation grant was needed to meet obligations while the band is regaining its pre-COVID strength and the board seeks long-term budget stability,” continued the press release.
For 35 years, the band has provided local musicians the opportunity to play in a quality group as well as provided concerts to regional audiences. The band’s roster usually includes more than 40 woodwind, brass and percussion players who live within about a 50-mile radius of The Dalles. The band generally performs at least one concert during each season of the year, playing a range of music from classical to contemporary.
The GWCB, including the director, is a 100% volunteer organization administered by a board composed of band members, said the press release. Many members play in other regional musical groups as well, and some have performed professionally or served as music educators.
“But people in GWCB participate because they enjoy making music,” finished the press release. “The band and its board are extremely grateful to the Oregon Community Foundation and its donors.”
