THE DALLES — The Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society hosts “Explorers, ownership claims and how we came to be named Oregon” on March 23 beginning at 11 a.m. in the downstairs classroom at Columbia Gorge Discovery Center.
The program is free, and no entrance fee to the museum is required.
“Explorers came by sea and by land and made claims of ownership for Spain, Russia, England and America,” said a press release. “We have places that bear their names (Heceta, Fremont, Bonneville, Douglas, McKenzie, etc.).”
The program will be led by Darrell Jabin, called Oregon’s Traveling Historian, who has researched explorers, the claims countries made and how one exploration likely led to how we came to be named Oregon. He has been discovering, researching and sharing unique Oregon stories since 2009. He has a following on social media and provided more than 350 presentations on Oregon history throughout our state.
