Needing money for a life-saving bladder surgery for one of its dogs, Home At Last in The Dalles decided to turn to GoFundMe for help.
And people responded, raising $1,000 in less than 24 hours for BB, an 8-year-old YorkiPoo who was brought to the humane society last week after his owner suffered a heart attack.
The Pink Poodle Grooming Salon groomed BB for no charge. But even though he was no longer shaggy, BB still had a problem. Because of two large stones in his bladder, BB was constantly trying to use the bathroom, even when he didn’t have to.
“He’s a real trooper because we know he’s in a lot of pain right now. It’s very tough,” Home At Last Director Bob Francis said. “We knew if we didn’t do something for him, it would be difficult for him to even survive. The thing we constantly face here at Home at Last is if we get an animal in that’s in need of medical care, we have to figure what the cost of the health care is and are we going to accept the medical care. His surgery is going to be about a $1,000 and that’s even with a generous discount at My Family’s Pet Doctor.”
Home At Last created the GoFundMe account early Monday afternoon. When Francis went home for the evening, $200 had been donated. But when he came in Tuesday morning, it was up to $700.
“Overnight people had started throwing money in,” Francis said. “We were trying to get it by today so we could schedule the surgery for Monday. He’s going to be a happy camper.”
Just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, Peggy Williams became the 30th and final person to donate, writing “This should get you to your goal. He is soooo cute, wish I could take him,” as she gave $160 to the cause.
“The generosity of the people, not only in The Dalles but Hood River and the other surrounding counties, made this possible,” Francis said.
“It just gives you a really good feeling when you know there’s a lot of generous people.”
Home At Last has also already found a foster home for BB after his surgery.
“We’re really excited that he’s going to be okay,” Francis said.
