Ping and Woof Opera is proud to bring to Hood River their first fully staged production, Mozart’s Così fan Tutte. This charming and funny tale of a bet that goes in unexpected directions is sure to enchant!
Presented in Italian with English subtitles, the plot and humor are easy to follow. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience opera in an intimate setting performed by up and coming artists.
Ping and Woof Opera is a new small opera company in Portland, Ore., dedicated to bringing opera directly to the community and helping young artists in the Portland area advance their career in opera. In this production, the setting is reworked into a Pacific Northwest hipster and Hood River setting, and the gender politics in the plot keep things quite entertaining.
Portland’s newest opera company spotlights its singers with this medley of favorite opera arias and ensembles. The cast features Rachael Marsh, soprano, Rebecca Sacks, mezzo-soprano, Jocelyn Claire Thomas, soprano, James Walters, tenor, Luke MacMillan, baritone, and Zachary Lenox, baritone.
Performances are Friday, April 15 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 17 at 2 p.m. at the Columbia Center for the Arts. Tickets ($20) are available at gorgeorchestra.org and at the door.
These two programs are presented by the Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association and generously sponsored through the Columbia Center For the Arts Partner Project by Dr. Tina Castañares and Doris Castañares.
Soprano Jocelyn Claire Thomas is known locally for her vocal performances at Marchesi Vineyard events and baritone Luke MacMillan has grown up performing in the Hood River Valley.
The title Così fan tutte literally means "Thus do all (women)," but is usually translated into English as "Women are like that." It is an Italian-language opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart first performed in 1790, at the Burgtheater in Vienna, Austria.
The opera uses the theme of “fiancée swapping,” and is said to contain elements from Shakespeare's “The Taming of the Shrew,” as well as mythological overtones.
