PORTLAND — The Warner Pacific Athletics Department is proud to announce the return of golf to Warner Pacific University.
Golf being added for the 2025-26 season will be the first time golf has been at Warner Pacific since the 2018-19 campaign. To lead us into this new era of Knights Golf will be Gary Akiyama who was the head coach at Multnomah for 12 years. In 2023 Gary was named the Coach Of The Year for Multnomah University.
“I am humbled and honored to be able to coach the golf program at such a great university at Warner Pacific University,” Akiyama said. “I want to bring a Christian aspect to these young men on and off the course to prepare them for life.”
Gary has been married 41 years to his wife Anne. They have four grown children and four grandchildren. Gary was born and raised in Hood River, Oregon and is a graduate of Oregon State University. When time allows he enjoys being with his grandchildren, camping, golfing, watching all sports, and stamp collecting.
“I’ve known Gary for quite a while going back to my basketball coaching days,” Athletic Director Matt Gregg said. “I am very happy that he will be reviving the golf program at Warner Pacific. I know he will do a great job with our young men not only teaching them golf skills but also teaching them about Christ.”
