The Dalles High Riverhawks wrestling team opened their OSAA Class 4A schedule with their season opening tourney Dec. 2 at Estacada, where the 20-member Riverhawk squad took sixth place.
The Dalles, guided by first-year Coach Barry Abrams, scored 93 points out of 12 teams in the Ranger Classic Tournament. Skyview took first place with 218 points.
“We had six placers in the tournament, so we really had a great showing after just two weeks of practice,” said Abrams. “Alexander De La Torre had an outstanding performance with four pins all in the first round and he beat some really solid kids, who were all state qualifiers from last year. Alexander looked outstanding in going undefeated in four matches and he continues to impress his coaches and the fans. He’s a real gamer.”
De La Torre, a sophomore, took first place in the 157-pound weight classification. The Dalles freshmen Amador Velador (113) was fifth, and Creighten Clack (132) was sixth. Riverhawk sophomore Harley Scott took fifth place in the 138-pound division. The Dalles sophomore Josh Breckenbury took sixth place at 175 pounds, and junior Julian Moorehouse (190) took fourth.
“Nearly everyone had three or four matches, and we had 11 varsity wrestlers and nine in the JV tournament,” Abrams said. “It was a tough tournament, particular since La Grande was here and they’ve won the 4A state tournament the last three years.
“The first tournament is always like a testing ground, because we get a chance to see where our holes our and we can see what we’re doing right, too.”
The tournament was split into two brackets, which included novice for first-year wrestlers and the varsity event for experienced athletes. The Dalles had nine wrestlers in the novice class who were competing in their first-ever high school wrestling match. The Dalles junior Egan Ziegenhagen won three novice class matches by pins.
