WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Feb. 3, Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03),announced her intention tovisit the Dilley, Texas, detention facilityonThursday and Fridayto ensure that the Crespo-Gonzalezfamilyhas access to medical care and due process. TheCrespo-Gonzalez familywas detained earlier this monthwhile taking their sick 7-year-old child to urgent care.Thatchild and her parentsarenow being held ina facilitywithtwodocumentedactive measles cases.
“No child, but especially not a sick second grader on the way to urgent care, should be detained by ICE and thentrapped in afacility with active measles cases,”said Congresswoman Dexter, one of six Democratic physicians serving in Congress.“The inhumanity is staggering.I cannot stand by while my constituents’ rights are stripped, and our country’s values eroded.I’mtraveling to Texasto check in on the well-being of this Oregon family, to assess the conditions of their detentionandtoensure their access to due process. I am fully vaccinated against measles and will take all proper precautionswhenallowed inside.”
Congresswoman Dexter has madenumerousinquiries on behalf of the Crespo-Gonzalezfamily, including demanding a wellness check, medical attention, and an explanation of the basis for their detention.
