Dylan Rabinowitz rushed for more than 125 yards and two touchdowns last Saturday against The Dalles Black, but that wasn't enough to give the White Salmon Black their third Gorge Youth Football League win in a row.
After a scoreless first period on the field of Stevenson High School's stadium, The Dalles came alive and scored the game's first touchdown on its way to a 26-16 victory.
But that would be all the scoring in the half as White Salmon's defense, led by Jose Briones and Josh Mayer, stiffened.
In the third quarter, White Salmon got its ground game untracked, with Rabinowitz finding the end zone from 40 yards out.
The point-after kick by Alex Contreras gave White Salmon the lead, 8-6. (In the YFL, a PAT kick is worth two points.)
The Dalles responded, however, with two consecutive runs to the end zone to reclaim the scoreboard advantage, 18-8.
Rabinowitz countered with three minutes left in the game, dashing 60 yards for a score. Contreras again booted the PAT, this time to cut The Dalles' lead to 26-16.
But White Salmon couldn't overcome that deficit, despite determined efforts by Ryan Combelic and Tobin Kelly on both sides of the ball, and standout defensive plays by Kasey Bond, Josh Mayer and Christian Contreras.
Bond batted down a pass that Mayer intercepted, and Contreras, playing nose guard, recovered a fumble.
Overall, though, "it just wasn't our day," said White Salmon coach Troy Webster.
The Black (2-2) looked to get back to their winning ways when they visited Stevenson on Wednesday, Sept. 29.
At Stevenson 14, White Salmon Red 0 --
The Red strived for the end zone last Saturday but couldn't get a break.
Connor Warner sparked White Salmon's running game but was held at bay by the Bulldogs, who scored two rushing touchdowns in the first half to build a 14-0 bulge.
First-half standouts for White Salmon on offense included Kurt Wilkins driving the ball up the middle, and Warner rushing up the right side for 18 yards.
Defensively, Seth Kona made a saving tackle in the second quarter and Chris Kennedy played well on the line. In the takeaway department, Daniel Thiel contributed with a fumble recovery.
And, while its offense struggled in the second half, White Salmon's defense made sure Stevenson didn't run away with the game.
Among the defensive stalwarts in the second half for the Red were Connor Goodwillie, Nolan Smith, Ephraim Nash and Russell Bucher.
The Red (0-3) will try again for their first win of the season when they host The Dalles White this Saturday at CHS Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m.
