As White Salmon celebrates its 100th anniversary, another centennial is taking place in Hylands Park in Chelmsford, England.
Kenny Collett of White Salmon and four scouts from Hood River will represent the area in an ocean of Khaki uniforms as over 40,000 scouts from 219 countries unite in England to mark the beginning of the scouting program. The jamboree runs from July 27 to Aug. 11.
The program began in 1907 with Sir Baden Powell on Brownsea Island off the coast of England.
This year's jamboree theme, "One World One Promise" focuses on creating solutions to the issues of all mankind and helping these young people learn to find ways to work together. Scouts will experience different cultures, religions and languages at the many pavilions and learning centers at the jamboree site.
"Scouting is more than just summer camp, it's about helping people and giving back," said Kenny Collett.
"I'm proud to be involved in an organization that gives these young men a way to develop leadership skills and create in them a desire to stay involved in their community throughout their lives," said Jennifer Collett, local White Salmon scout leader.
Local Troop 384 of White Salmon participates in several community service projects each year, including placing flags at the cemetery on Memorial Day.
