Flotilla 73 of the United State Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering "America's Boating Safety," a one-day public education course covering boating safety and skills, on Saturday, Aug. 16.
The class will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sterling Savings Bank, 201 W. Main St., in Goldendale. Cost for the course, which includes book and study materials, is $35.
"Rather than breaking the class into two days, a one-day session was chosen to give more people the chance to attend a quality class without tying up two days of their summer," said Kenneth Babick Sr., public education staff officer for Flotilla 73, Division 7.
The course will cover boat handiling, navigation rules, safety equipment, course plotting, chart reading, aids to navigation, knots and lines, use of VHF radios and weather, among other subjects.
Moreover, the class is designed to prepare boating enthusiasts for the Oregon or Washington Safe Boaters card test, which is required by state law for Oregon residents 12 to 70 years of age and for Washington residents ages 12-20.
"We have discovered over many years of experience that an educated boater is a safe boater," Babick noted. "Most of the people we assist have had no formal boater education. Pleae keep your family safe and attend this class."
To register for the course, call Tony Delucca at (509) 773-7844 or Guy Theriault at (509) 252-0922; leave a message if no one answers and someone will return the call.
