Snowden resident Debby Bergstrom will be sworn in as District 2 school director at the Oct. 20 meeting of the White Salmon Valley School District's board of education.
Bergstrom, a doctor of optometry and an owner of Bergstrom Family Eyecare in White Salmon, was the unanimous choice of sitting directors Tom Stevenson, Jeff Cooper and Kris Kreps to replace Kristi Hurn.
Hurn, who joined the school board in 2001 and was elected to the District 2 position in 2007, had to step down this summer after district administrative staff discovered, while conducting research on director district boundaries, that she lives outside the District 2 boundary.
Bergstrom and Bill Clack, also a Snowden resident and the District 2 director from 2003-07, applied for the board appointment to the open seat. (The position's term runs through 2011.)
Directors Stevenson, Cooper, Kreps and chairman Paul Mosbrucker interviewed the two candidates on Sept. 22 at the district administrative office, during a special meeting of the school board.
In her application, Bergstrom wrote, "Having had a child in each of our schools, I feel a need to contribute what I can. Being on the SIP (School Improvement Plan) Committee [for Henkle Middle School] gave me a unique understanding of not only the constraints the schools are forced to operate under, but also the willingness of some terrific school officials to do whatever they can to provide for the kids. I feel I can do no less than what we as parents ask of our schools, what the schools and we parents ask of our kids."
The school board's Oct. 20 meeting will be held in the Columbia High School library starting at 7 p.m.
