Three days after setting a Bruin Booster Invitational record, Columbia High's 4x400-meter relay team was at it again.
On April 23, the foursome of Matt Lovrin, Conner Williams, Adam Neff and Keith McMillen broke the school record of 3:29 it had been pursuing the past two weeks.
The quartet's winning time was 3:28.11. It finished nearly 21 seconds ahead of the second-place crew from Stevenson.
That and Brett Schutt's victory in the pole vault (he cleared 12 feet, 6 inches) were CHS's only first-place finishes in the meet, which also included competitors from Glenwood, Klickitat and Trout Lake.
That's because Bruins Coach Doug Miller chose to hold most of his top athletes out of the competition.
CHS standout Kristin Janney competed in one event. That was the triple jump, in which she placed second behind Klickitat's Jordan Graeme (34-91/2 to 35-9).
Graeme, who also prevailed in the high jump (4-8), was one of two girls to win two events.
The other was from Stevenson, which took team honors with 202 points. CHS had 122 to finish second.
The top performer on the boys side was Michael Payne of Klickitat. He placed first in the 100 (12.26), long jump (19-7) and triple jump (42-41/2).
Stevenson won the team competition, outscoring Trout Lake, 163 to 143. White Salmon was fifth, with 38.
At Montesano, April 16
Montesano won both the girls and boys competition of the four-team SW Washington 2A meet that included CHS, Elma and Rochester.
Columbia High's girls took second with 57 points but finished 29 back of the victorious Monte girls. Rochester was third (55), with Elma bringing up the rear (52).
CHS's boys finished fourth with 45 points in their weakest showing of the season. Monte's boys had 77, followed by Elma (67) and Rochester (61).
Kristin Janney led the CHS girls' effort, taking first place in the 100 (13.73), the high jump (with a PR of 5-1) and triple jump (32-11/2).
Whitney Shelley in the 1600 (6:36.9) and Jennie Stembridge in the 400 (1:07.54) were CHS's only other winners. Shelley also placed third in the javelin.
Katie Mansfield contributed with second-place finishes in the long jump (14-0) and the triple jump (30-8).
In the 800, Justine Rawding came in second (3:03.16). Becky Jeter took third in the shot put (22-101/2) and sixth in the disucs (57-2).
In the relays, CHS teams were second in the 4x400, third in the 4x200 and fourth in the 4x100.
The highlight of the meet for Columbia's boys was a PR and first-place finish by the 4x400 relay crew of Matt Lovrin, Conner Williams, Adam Neff and Keith McMillen.
They posted a time of 3:31.13 in their quest to break the school record of 3:29.
McMillen in the 400 (51.25) and Mike Wild in the discus (with a season-best of 150-11) also were victorious for CHS.
Wild also turned in a second-place effort in the shot put (45-4), as did Neff in the 100 (11.49) and 200 (23.81), and Brett Schutt in the 800 (2:16.32). Schutt added a third in the high jump (5-2).
Fourth-place finishes went to Matt Lovrin, who ran his first 400 of the season in 54.11, and CHS's 4x100 relay team.
Williams in the 200 (24.99) and Wes Blankenship in the shot put (39-3) came in fifth.
