Obituaries

She spent her whole life in Klickitat graduating from Klickitat High School in 1948. On June 25, 1949, she married Walter Greenfield (known to friends as Butter).

She was a homemaker and after her children were grown she worked at the market in Klickitat and the Thriftway in White Salmon. She did childcare for families in the community. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, and loved cooking/baking.

She was a member of the Royal Neighbors, Ladies Auxiliary, PTA, Klickitat Historical Museum, Canyon Days and Klickitat Volunteer Fire Department fundraising committee.

She loved going to the beach and other family outings. She hosted many family dinners and spent many hours watching school sports and other school activities.

She is survived by her daughters Valerie Steindorf (Mike), Cheryl Steindorf (Randy), and Tammy Greenfield all of Klickitat. Her grandchildren Traci Kessinger, Ryan Greenfield (Sarah), Michele Beautista (Pip) of Klickitat, Keith Kessinger (Rhonda), Mark Steindorf, and Randi Steindorf (Angel) of Portland, Lindsay Steindorf (T.C.) of Port St., Joe and Nathan Steindorf (Tammy) of Richland. Thirteen great-grandchildren and two more on the way, one in February and one in May. She is also survived by her youngest sister Sue Bartholomew (Alba) and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband Walter Greenfield, son Mark Greenfield, daughter Kristy Kessinger, her parents John and Della Monroe, brother William John Monroe and sister Beverly Kamp.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at the LDS Church in Goldendale at 1 p.m. with burial at IOOF cemetery.

Columbia Hills Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

MARY SMITH

Mary Eunice Smith passed away at her home in Appleton on Nov. 1, 2011. She was born June 1916 to Oliver Perry and Mary Lydia Nixon on their homestead just out of Clinton, Ark. She was the youngest of 13 children.

She married Arthur Joseph Smith on Jan. 2, 1932, in Clinton, Ark. They lived in a little log house and later built a new house there. By 1947, they had five children and decided to move west, landing in The Dalles, Ore., in the spring.

They lived in a little trailer and tent in a field up about 12th and Dry Hollow. By fall, they had moved to Appleton and lived on Canyon Rd., where the purple house is now. In March, on a cold rainy, snowy day they moved back into the little trailer and tent, where Coley and Lola now live. Together the family built a big log house (that never got finished but almost).

In the summer of 1957, they sold the place and moved back to Arkansas to take care of Eunice's aging mother. By then, there were five more children in the family. In the late spring of 1968, they moved west once again. By then two more children were added to the family living in Ravendale for a while, then California a few months, and came back again to Appleton.

Eunice loved working in her yard and flowers. She loved her family and Sunday dinners were always a big part of her life. She loved parties and was always looking for a reason to have one-- be it Tupperware or a birthday for one of the kids. She tried to make sure her kids went to church camp in the summer and cooked at Camp Moro, Ore., a few years.

She went to work at Diamond Fruit in Hood River in the early 70s and worked there until it closed. She loved to travel and see relatives. She would go every chance she got if she talked someone into taking her.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 75 years, Joe; and her son Arthur.

She is survived by her children: Robert, David, Dan, Sam, LaDonna Osburn, Lola Osburn and Sue Berry, all of Appleton, Ellen Bittinger of Lyle, Ben of The Dalles, Debbie Simpson of Dallesport, and Grace Parker of Fort Myers, Fla.; 49 grandchildren, 82 great-grandchildren, and 18 great, great-grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed by all.

Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Appleton.

ANGELINE ALLEN

Angeline (Angie) Mae Mariah Allen, 90, died peacefully in the home of her daughter Wanda in Home Valley on Oct. 26, 2011, where she had been lovingly cared for since a stroke in 2009. She was born on Dec. 17, 1920, in Devil's Lake, N.D., the second of 10 children born to the late John and Josephine Budd.

Her family moved from North Dakota to Walla Walla, where Angie attended college and then worked as a secretary until 1951, when she married Norman G. Allen in August of that year. Together they raised four children, moving first to Bremerton, WA, then to Appleton, before settling for a time in Stevenson.

As they grew older they became snowbirds, flitting to Quartzite, Ariz., for the winters.

Angie loved Jesus, loved people, and loved helping those in need. She volunteered her time at the Seventh-Day Adventist community services center putting together food baskets for the holidays. She also diligently sent personal cards for birthdays and anniversaries to a mailing list numbering in the hundreds.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist churches in White Salmon, Hood River, Ore., and most notably Stevenson, where she was a Cradle Roll teacher for many years, sharing with the little ones the story of Jesus. She always had a hike planned or sledding parties for the youth, and loved to see the young people filling the pews of the little church.

She daily lived her life by the principles she held dear, with time spent daily in the Word of God and hands that were never idle. Even when arthritis in her fingers brought pain, there was still always a pantry full of breads, pies, and cookies, canned peaches, pears and cherries, ready for any and all that would accept her invitation to share a Sabbath meal.

She enjoyed crocheting, playing board games and card games, and walking with enough purpose and energy to make the younger generations run to keep up! She walked everywhere she could; rain or shine, snow or ice, it didn't matter to her! And Oh, her love of high heels! Such disappointment when her family asked her to put them away at the youthful age of 83!

Her love for traveling included her many spur-of-the-moment weekend getaways on the back of the Honda Aspencade during their retirement years (including visiting their favorite buffets!), going to Quartzite in the winters with the fifth wheel, sometimes with a load of "real" Christmas trees to spread the holiday cheer, and flying around the country after Norman's death to see her many relatives and loved ones.

Angie was preceded in death by Norman, her husband of 50 years, in 2002; her parents, her brother Orpheus Budd, and sister Rose Ludlow. She is survived by two sons: Terry (Anita) Allen of Parkdale, Ore., and Daryl (Lis) Allen of Carson; two daughters: Wanda (Craig) Salvesen of Home Valley, and Holly (Bob) Adderly of McMinville, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; two brothers: Joe (Patsy) Budd of Prescott, Ariz., Lyle (Lee) Budd of Moses Lake; five sisters: Marjorie (John) Weir of Colbert, Cleo (Glen) Forgey, Hazel (Wayne) Burns of Dayton, Ohio, Ruthie (Don) Jacobsen of Hiawassee, Ga., Naomi (Bill) Parsons of Citrus Heights, Calif.; 20 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held on Nov. 19, 2011, at the White Salmon SDA Church at 3 p.m. and will be officiated by Pastor Pat Milligan.

DON LONDON

Donald Ray London was born August 27, 1943. He arrived with a twin sister, Dorothy, in St. Louis, Mo. Dorothy passed away at 6 months old.

Don was extremely proud of his roots, coming from a poor share cropper family. Don started working at an early age (12 years old) earning 25 cents an hour picking cotton doing 10 hour days. The wages were children's wages with the adults earning 50 cents an hour. While Don was still 12 the London family moved to California where they could get jobs for the children and adults at $1 an hour. They followed the harvests picking fruits and vegetables, slowly working their way up the west coast, finally arriving at Mt. Adams Orchards above BZ Corner in 1957.

Don went into the Army in 1960 and was discharged in 1962 as an army intelligence specialist (he said they must have known something he didn't). He was stationed in Germany and patrolled the east and west German borders.

As a young man he loved riding horses and racing motorcycles with his brother Bill.

He was a hard working young man and worked at various jobs and also owned and operated his own logging business.

He married Millie West in 1964 and they had 3 children, John, Dan, and Teresa. After five years, Mille and Don went their separate ways but remained friends. Don met and married Effie Phelps in 1968. They had one son Mike London and two step children Nicky and Jackie Phelps. Don and Effie parted as friends and went their separate ways. Don met his true love Ginger and after several years of Don trying to convince Ginger what a great guy he was they married in 1988. For their honeymoon they attended a high school homecoming football game and Jerry Smith, as the game announcer, told the world over the loud speakers about their marriage and newlywed status! Ginger brought to this marriage two children, Bobbie and Pam (Tweety).

Don and Ginger finally settled in their current home near the high school in White Salmon. Don and Ginger enjoyed golfing and especially the summer tournaments. Don wanted to say a huge, warm thank you to Terry and Kerri Anderson, Rudy and Keren Dierickx and Don and Heidi Struck for the tournaments and the good times. It meant a lot to him.

Don enjoyed hunting a great deal and his most favorite hunting dog of all time was Huckleberry! Once asked how long he was gonna bird hunt with Huckleberry, Don said until he couldn't throw him in the air anymore. Huckleberry would get into porcupines and have to be taken to the vet to have the quills removed. The vet gave Huckleberry some good pain killers, so good that as soon as the meds were gone Huckleberry would hunt up a porcupine, get the quills stuck, and wait in the pickup for the trip to the vet.

Don emphasized his great love for his family and how proud he was of each and every one of them. He really loved his grandchildren and great grand kids and wanted them close as much as he could.

Don passed away at his home on November 12, 2011. He is survived by his wife Ginger; children Dan London of California, Teresa London of Portland, Mike London of Vancouver; stepchildren Pam Lewis of Portland, Bobbie Gentry of Portland, Nicky Phelps of White Salmon, Jackie Thomas of White Salmon and John Garret of Mosier; sister Flora Hamlin "Bobie" of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and lots of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Hank and Lila London, brothers Jack and Bill London, and sisters Jean Martin and Patricia Merrick.

A memorial service for Don will be held at Gardner Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at 10 a.m. with a potluck reception to follow at the Elks Lodge in White Salmon. Don will be greatly missed by all.

HELEN ROBINSON

Helen Trieglaff Robinson was born Helen Ruth to Carl and Emma (Schmidt) Trieglaff on Sept. 10, 1925, in Frazee, Minn. She graduated from Frazee High in 1943 and moved to Milwaukee, Wisc., where she worked in defense plants. She moved back to Frazee and worked in the Ice Cream Parlor for her brothers, Ed and Ralph.

She married LeRoy B. Robinson in 1947, and they moved to White Salmon. While raising their, children Helen worked in area restaurants for over 25 years. At the time she retired in 1986, she was employed at Underwood Fruit where she worked in the box making department.

Helen was active in Our Savior Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid Society and, the Good Shepherd Home Auxiliary for many years. All remember Helen as a giving person who liked very much to make others happy.

Helen Trieglaff Robinson is survived by her three children, daughter Susan E. Robinson, son Kenneth L. Robinson and his wife Tina all of Port Orchard, and son Gregory A. Robinson and wife Jill of Silverdale.

Also surviving are sister-in-law Mel Trieglaff of Frazee, Minn., granddaughter Jamie (daughter to Ken) and husband Takahiro, great granddaughter Colbie Ruth Koyama of Calif., grandsons Nick and Kris Robinson (Jill and Greg), grandson Sean Burns, his wife Carrie and their children Asher and Isis (great grandchildren) of Port Orchard, grandson Chris Hunsaker of Renton, granddaughter Kathy Miller of White Salmon, and granddaughter Kelly Montgomery of Hood River.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bingen. Helen will be laid to rest with her husband at the White Salmon Cemetery.
