DAGMARA DEIDERS
Dagmara Erika Deiders, Trout Lake, died on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at her home, at the age of 93.
She was born to Paul Eduard and Juliana (Ogle) Weinberg on March 12, 1910, in Jelgava, Latvia, where she completed high school. In June of 1933, she married Peteris Voldemars Deiders in Valmiera, Latvia. They both worked for a meat exporting company. She was a laboratory technician. They lived in Valmiera, Latvia, until Sept. 22, 1944, when they had to leave home due to the approaching Russian Army. They moved to Germany, living mostly in Wurzburg, Germany until September 1949, when they received sponsorship from George and Ethel Pearson of Trout Lake to come to the United States. They arrived in Trout Lake on Oct. 9, 1949.
Mrs. Deiders enjoyed gardening and flower growing until her health failed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peteris V. Deiders.
She is survived by sons Herbert, Vilhelms, John and Andris and daughter Inese B. Allaway, all of Trout Lake; daughter Anita E. Langfield, Springfield, Ore., and Zigrida Simmons, Tacoma; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Interment was at the Trout Lake Cemetery.
Gardner Funeral Home handled arrangements.
REV. KELSEY CLEAR
Rev. Kelsey Norman Clear, 72, a pastor in The Dalles for 39 years died at the local hospital of a sudden illness, on Saturday, May 24, 2003.
He was born Oct. 26, 1930, in Evening Shade, Ark., the oldest of three children to Clifford and Leila Ann (Watson) Clear. He grew up in Myron, Ark. and graduated from Violet Hill High School. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1953, and then returned to Arkansas.
In 1954, he moved to California, where he met and later married Peggy Marlene Donaldson on August 24, 1956, in Santa Monica. He entered Bible College and completed his studies in 1963.
In 1965, Rev. Clear and his family moved to The Dalles with the Christian Evangelical Assemblies and started Covenant Christian Community Church at 10th & Kelly Ave. The church expanded and moved to new facilities on East 18th Street in 1983.
Mr. Clear enjoyed his church and helping the community's members, his family, the computer and flying his own plane.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy; his twin children David Clear and Diane Hartley, both of The Dalles; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Seth, Andrew, Annessa and Kaylie; and sister, Raye Stewart, Ash Flat, Ark. He was preceded in death by his brother, Hale Clear.
Memorial services were held at Covenant Christian Community, in The Dalles at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2003. Private burial was held at Parklawn Cemetery.

LAURA JOHNSTON
Former Underwood resident Elizabeth Laura Johnston died March 31, 2003, at the Hood River Care Center, at the age of 98.
Miss Johnston was born in Oakland, Calif., on Oct. 16, 1904, to James A. and Jeanette A. Graham Johnston. She attended McKinley Elementary and Sacramento High School. Upon graduation from high school, Miss Johnston attended San Jose State College, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree and received her teaching credential in home economics. Her first teaching job was at Needham High School in Lodi, Calif., where she taught foods and clothing for three years. She then taught at Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale for the remainder of her 30-year teaching career.
In June 1960, she retired from teaching, sold her house and moved to Underwood, where she built a home overlooking the Columbia River, Hood River Valley and Mt. Hood.
She shared her home for many years with her late friend Sarah Martin.
During that time Miss Johnston worked part-time for 18 years for the Skamania County Civil Service Commission in voter registration and voter balloting.
Miss Johnston resided at her Washington home until age 84. In 1989, she was the second resident to move into Hood River's Down Manor where she resided until the age of 96. In November 2000, she moved to Brookside Manor. In 2002, she was moved to the Hood River Care Center.
Miss Johnston was a Life Member of the California Teacher's Association, OSU Alumni and several other organizations.
Miss Johnston is survived by her Graham cousins Mary Foulks Mauger, Jacklyn Mauger Linn and Marvlyn Mauger McInnes.
