KENNETH NYLIN

Kenneth Richard Nylin was born October 8, 1946, in Seattle. He died June 10, 2003, at his home in White Salmon. He was 56.

Mr. Nylin played oboe in the Seattle Symphony Orchestra as a youth. He enjoyed working with his father, a landscape architect. He served in the U.S. Army Engineering Corps during the Vietnam war.

Mr. Nylin attended Washington State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education.

Mr. Nylin began teaching agriculture at Columbia High School in 1975. He taught metal shop, animal science, horticulture and forestry, and he was the FFA advisor for 26 years. For many years, Mr. Nylin could be seen around the community riding a John Deere tractor, either mowing or tilling, to raise funds for FFA. He gave much of his free time to tractor operations. He is remembered by his students as a man that gave what you needed. Mr. Nylin was a man you could count on. He never shirked a task and worked because he loved the sense of accomplishment in a job well done. This ethic he passed on to his students and staff.

Mr. Nylin became vocational director in 2001. He was a visionary who led his staff into the future by understanding thoroughly the challenges ahead. He was a constant advocate for vocational education. He was well respected by the staff and students and will be missed greatly.

Mr. Nylin enjoyed fishing, hunting and working on his land. He spent the last 20 years clearing land and developing a lovely home in Snowden. And he still had time to help his friends and neighbors when they needed a hand.

Recently, Mr. Nylin had been yachting in the Puget Sound with his wife and mother. He was very enthusiastic about having the time to spend with them.

He was a member of many organizations including: Washington Association of Agriculture Educators, Association of Career and Technical Education, NRA, White Salmon Steelheaders, Elks Lodge, and the Oddfellows.

He was preceded in death by his father Frederick E. Nylin.

He is survived by his mother, Betsy Nylin, Bremerton; wife, Nancy Nylin. White Salmon; brother, Phillip Nylin, Woodinville; sister, Kay Wardell, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; daughter, Lisa Sirek, New York; and son Gary Nylin, White Salmon.

BETTY JONES

Betty Pollard Jones died at her Vancouver home on June 12, 2003.

She was born in Plattsmouth, Neb., to Cyril and Marie Kalina on Aug. 18, 1919, and remained in Plattsmouth until graduating from high school in 1937. She and Newell Pollard were married that fall and relocated to Stockton, Calif. They moved to the White Salmon area in mid-1938. The couple moved to Bingen in 1939, where they remained until his retirement in 1969. During these years, she particularly enjoyed their many summers at remote USFS guard stations including that at Oklahoma (near Willard), and those at Trout Lake, Willard and Mosquito Lake.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband in 1974 and later by her second husband, Clifford R. Jones, whom she met while enjoying Arizona winters near Phoenix.

Mrs. Jones is survived by her daughter Lynne Bronson, Vancouver; son Loren Pollard, Tacoma; granddaughter Joni Martin, Tacoma; grandsons Jeff Pollard and Alan Bronson, both of Portland; great-grandchildren Cassandra, Josh and Jordan; brother Edwin Kalina, Santa Cruz, Calif.; and two nieces.

At her request, there will be no services. A private inurnment is scheduled soon at Hood River's Idlewild Cemetery.

JOHN RIDNOUR

Longtime Skamania County resident John Eldon Ridnour died in Hood River on June 16, 2003. He was 95 years old.

Mr. Ridnour was born to Eliza Blanche (Leighton) and John William Ridnour in Corning, Iowa, on Sept. 18, 1907. On Nov. 24, 1928, he married Beulah Belle Garrett in Iowa. The couple moved to Mill A in 1942 and Mr. Ridnour went to work for Broughton Lumber Company, where he worked for over 40 years before retiring in the early 1980s.

Mr. Ridnour enjoyed gardening and was perfectly content to scratch around in the dirt, planting and growing things. He was a farmer, raising cows and, for a time, pigs. He liked to play cards, but mostly in winter when it was too cold to be outside.

Mr. Ridnour is survived by his daughters Lois Green, Underwood, and Mary Lee Birkenfeld, Carson; brother Ralph Ridnour, Walnut, Iowa; sisters Zona Schnepp and Betty Johnson, both of Corning, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great, great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his wife, Beulah, daughters Margaret Oberst and Veta Green, brothers Orval, Oren and Elmer, and sisters Hazel Ridnour and Meda Mitchell.

A graveside service was held at Chris Zada Cemetery in Underwood on Thursday, June 19, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Dave West officiating.

Gardner Funeral Home handled arrangements.

MARK SHEBLEY

Mark Thomas Shebley, 57, a resident of The Dalles, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at the VA Hospital in Portland, Ore.

He was born Jan. 18, 1946, in Mt. Vernon, Ill., the oldest of five children of Ella McLeod Shebley and Justin "Jerry" Shebley. He lived and attended schools in Klickitat County, leaving Lyle to join the Navy on Jan. 28, 1963. After completing his service, he returned to Lyle where he worked at various jobs in the lumber industry until re-enlisting in the Navy.

His Naval career took him to the Mediterranean, Middle East, Philippines, Midway Island, Treasure Island, and Puget Sound, where he was a yard craft boat captain. He also spent time as a recruiter. He had achieved the rank of Chief Boatswain Mate (E-7) when his health forced his retirement. After retirement, he worked for the Postal Service, Mervyn's and as a security guard.

He enjoyed working on classic cars, most recently his second 1965 Barracuda. He was an Entered Apprentice Mason and a member of Mid-Columbia Car Club.

Mr. Shebley is survived by his wife Kathy; sons Eugene, Bakersfield, Calif., and Calvin, Crittenden, Ky.; grandchildren Brittany, Justin, Anthony, Paige and Faith; brothers Ernie Webster, Appleton, and Jerry Shebley, The Dalles; sisters Ruby Jean Wustoff, The Dalles, and Sonnie, Vancouver; stepchildren Stan and Julie, Portland; mother of his children, Patricia Henderson, Lyle; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral service and committal was held June 17, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Chapel and Cemetery in Appleton, with Pastor Ken Post presiding.

Memorials may be made to the American Liver Foundation or the Multiple Sclerosis Society in care of Gardner Funeral Home, PO Box 390, White Salmon, Wash. 98672, who handled arrangements.

DERALD KUHNHAUSEN

Derald Vern Kuhnhausen died June 2, 2003, in Juneau, Alaska at the age of 65.

Mr. Kuhnhausen was born Aug. 8, 1937, in White Salmon, to Thelma (Murray) Kuhnhausen and Vern Kuhnhausen. He was raised in Glenwood, and graduated from Glenwood High School. He served in the United States Army and was an active entrepreneur throughout his lifetime. He lived in Vancouver, Newport, Spokane, Moses Lake and Marysville.

Mr. Kuhnhausen is survived by his wife, Vickie, Marysville; sons Tony Kuhnhausen, West Jordan, Utah, Monte Kuhnhausen, Spokane, Shayne Kuhnhausen, Iowa, and Quinndel Kuhnhausen, Snoqualmie; daughters Kim, Yelm, Tina Ambrose, Post Falls, Idaho, Sonya McCreary, Baker City, Ore., Tonya Kuhnhausen, Deer Park; sisters Donna Gehrman and Wilda Roberts both of Longview, Darlene Zimmerman, Longbeach, Thelma Smith, Vancouver; brothers Jerry Kuhnhausen, Yacolt, Ted Kuhnhausen, Maupin, Ore., Terry Kuhnhausen, Orlando, Fla., and Rick Kuhnhausen, Sisters, Ore.; and twenty seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brother Konrad Kuhnhausen and daughter Cindy.

Services for Mr. Kuhnhausen were held June 7, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home in Stanwood, with Doug Higgins officiating. Interment will be held at Mount Adams Cemetery, Glenwood, Washington, Aug. 9, 2003, at 10 a.m.

Memorials may be given to Volunteers of America Crosswalk Project for Homeless Children, Spokane.

RICHARD ELMER

Richard "Dick" R. Elmer died May 31, 2003, at the age of 95.

A graveside service was held at noon on June 4, 2003, at the Crescent Grove Cemetery in Tigard, Ore. A memorial is planned for August at Diamond Lake, Ore.

Mr. Elmer was born Dec. 24, 1907, in Glenwood to Albert and Regina Elmer. He married Wilma on April 29, 1933, in Portland.

As a youth, he worked for the Forest Service on a mule pack train. He later worked in the trucking industry for 30 years. He retired in 1974.

Mr. Elmer was a member of Odd Fellows. He enjoyed being with his family, playing cards and watching the Trailblazers. He also enjoyed outdoor activities.

Survivors include son Richard, Bend; daughters Joyce Hyland, Milwaukie, Ore., and Rebecca Arnold, Beverly Meyer and Barbara Borlen, all of Bend, Ore.; 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and two great, great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter.
