VIRGINIA ISTLER
76-year-old Dallesport resident Virginia Marie Istler died in White Salmon on Feb. 13, 2002.
She was born to Alfred William and Mary Lucille (Burks) Hook on Jan. 9, 1926 in Montana, Ark. She moved to California in 1952 and in 1961, she married William Istler. For 25 years, she worked for Sunkist Packing as an orange packer and sorter in Orange Cove, Calif. She retired in the late 1970s and moved to Washington in 1997.
Mrs. Istler loved puzzle books and counting change. She was a great storyteller and enjoyed telling old time stories. She also collected clocks.
Mrs. Istler is survived by many brothers and sisters, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Bill, who died in 1995, and son Gary Hook, who died in 1996.
At her request, there will be no formal services.
Gardner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
DARLENE OHNEMUS
Darlene Vivian Ohnemus died in her Burbank, Calif. home on Jan. 10, 2002.
She was born May 2, 1937, in White Salmon, the fifth of 12 children and the eldest daughter of Omer J. Ohnemus and Margaret (Mills) Ohnemus.
Ms. Ohnemus was raised in White Salmon and graduated from Columbia High School in 1955. She attended Centralia Junior College and the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1959, she moved with her sister, Dixie, to San Francisco, Calif. where she was employed by Sunset Outdoor Advertising and the McCormick-Schilling Company.
In 1964, she began a career in marketing and economic research with Sunkist, Inc., Burbank, Calif. that lasted over 35 years. At her retirement from Sunkist in 1999, she was their economic research manager. During her career with Sunkist, she also pursued interests in astronomy, business and higher education.
Ms. Ohnemus was an outgoing, talented and interesting woman who gave generously of herself and her assets to friends and family. She is survived by sisters Dixie Doeschot, Newark, Calif., Diana Young, Renton, and Dolores Maxwell, Hobart; brothers, David, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Damon, Renton, Douglas, Carson, Daniel, Bend, Ore., Donald, Virginia Beach, Va., Duane, Cooper Landing, Ak., Dixon, White Salmon, and Doyle, Soldotna, Ak. She is also survived by 31 nephews and nieces and 12 great-nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1980, her mother in 1998 and one nephew, Frederick W. Maxwell IV in 1993.
An interment service in White Salmon is planned at a later date.
VERLEY WOOSLEY
Verley R. "Wig" Woosley died in Hood River, Ore., on Feb. 13, 2002, at the age of 92.
Mr. Woosley was born Jan. 15, 1910, in Kimball, W.V. He lived in Hood River before moving to Clark County 23 years ago.
He was a retail clerk in the grocery industry.
Mr. Woosley is survived by sons Roger L. Woosley, Hood River, and Terry A. Woosley, Vancouver; seven grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Edna in 1994.
Services for Mr. Woosley were held Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Brush Prairie Baptist Church in Vancouver. Interment was at Mt. Adams Cemetery in Glenwood.
GARADINE ESTEY
Garadine "Gari" Elaine Estey, Underwood, died Jan. 20, 2002, in Coolidge, Ariz.
She was born Dec. 2, 1936, to Russell and Katherine Lively, in Buhl, Idaho.
The family wishes everyone who knew and loved her to celebrate her life.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Dan Estey, Underwood; sons Rick, Carson, Monte, Everett; daughter Vicki Onthank, Columbia Falls, Mont.; mother Katherine Lively, Buhl, Idaho; brothers Roy and Jerry Lively, San Diego, Calif., and Russell Lively, Twin Falls, Idaho; sister Nelda Atkinson, Antioch, Calif.; granddaughters Sheanna and Rikki Estey, Carson; grandsons Chad and Shawn Onthank, Columbia Falls, Mont.; and Carter and Garrett Estey, Everett.
She was preceded in death by her father Russell Lively and son Daniel Estey.
There will be no memorial service at this time.
MELVA VAN VLIET
Melva Jean Van Vliet died on Feb. 14, 2002, at the age of 62.
She was born in Goldendale, on Aug. 6, 1939, to Claude and Sylvia (Winters) Campbell and moved with her family in 1941 to Mt. Brook and B-Z Corners. She attended schools in White Salmon.
She married John Van Vliet, Jr. on Aug. 18, 1954 and worked as a dietician at Skyline Hospital. She loved serving God and her family. She was a member of the Bingen Assembly of God Church, and enjoyed crocheting, teaching Sunday school, and doing volunteer work in her community. She had returned to school at Columbia Gorge Community College and had completed many courses there.
She is survived by her husband John; son Donald Van Vliet, Umatilla, Ore.; daughters Debbie Van Vliet, The Dalles, Sherry Shewey, Bingen, Kathy Lucas, Mt. Hood, and Roselind Valenzuela, Orange City, Iowa; sisters Joanne Walker and Judy Fink, both of White Salmon; and 15 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 3 on the way. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers; Melvin, Johnnie, and Jackie Campbell, and by her parents.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 21, 2002 at the Bingen Assembly of God Church, Pastor Bob Wolf presiding.
Arrangements were by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
