The Gorge Heritage Museum in Bingen has opened a visiting exhibit featuring the photography of Cal Crook, the late nature photographer from Husum.
Most Klickitat County citizens knew of Cal. Those who do not need to see his magic eye through his camera work. His Celilo Falls photos are most significant of his work. These photos were taken 11 years before the falls became submerged by the waters of The Dalles Dam.
Cal's advice: "The best teacher is to go out there and make mistakes."
After retiring as an educator, he went to work as a part-time firewatcher for SDS Lumber for over 20 years. Upon retiring his fishing and hunting gear he replaced them with his camera. His wildlife photos are of subjects that few of us will ever see in person.
The museum is located at 202 E. Humboldt Street in Bingen. The museum's hours are 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Thursday through Sunday.
The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 26.
