Just out of curiosity, I did an internet search on Mt. Adams, the beautiful mountain that dominates and adds to the scenic beauty of our area. This year we have hiked the Buck Creek Trail, around the trails by the Mt. Adams Horse Camp and around the Big Tree Loop. There are some interesting sites such as the Krohn photos at www.Krohn. org. They have photos of Mt. Adams, and old photos of a logging train, trout fishing, some from 1920 era. Another search brought up a few digital neighbors facts such as the population -- 766. (Probably from the last census taken.) They quoted our elevation as 2,308 feet. And they have a street map from the U.S. census data.
We have walked around Trout Lake and noticed how Mt. Adams reflects in the water, when the light is just right. The lake is shallow today but it wasn't always that way. When our cousins came up here in the late 1940s, it was a big, round circle lake with plenty of fish. Each year the folks from the Crown Zellerback paper mill would come to Trout Lake to camp and fish each summer. They would bring their families and have a fun time. The men would have a contest to see who caught the biggest fish. Each person would put a little money in a pot, enough to make up about $25 -- big money in those days. Now that the lake is shallow and over run with weeds, I haven't tried fishing in it. But we have seen elk and deer markings and we enjoy taking our field glasses and looking at the geese. When you go, don't forget your camera -- there are some beautiful photos to be made. Enjoy! Sandi
