Newborn Lucas Eaton is Hood River’s first baby of the new year.
Hood River’s first baby waited until Wednesday, Jan. 4 to make an appearance — and parents Ashley Bramlett and Alan Eaton had no idea his arrival meant they’d won the Hood River News’ First Baby contest.
“When (the nurse) told me that we had the first baby, I was like, ‘No way!’” Bramlett said, noting they were four days out from the New Year.
Lucas Ryan Eaton was born at 11:24 a.m. on Jan. 4, weighing in at 7 pounds, 9 ounces and measuring 21 inches. He joins two brothers, Conner, 4, and Grant, 1.
“The 1-year-old doesn’t understand, but our 4-year-old has been constantly asking, ‘Is my brother coming? Is it time?’” Bramlett said.
“Every. Day,” Eaton laughed.
The family lives in The Dalles, but has Hood River roots — Bramlett and Eaton both graduated from Hood River Valley High School.
To welcome Lucas to the world, a variety of Hood River merchants have donated everything from diapers and dinners to gas and toys.
“We were not expecting this,” said Bramlett. “It was a pleasant surprise.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, Lucas was content to sleep in his mother’s arms and wait to meet his brothers for the first time later that evening.
“He’s very happy and very healthy,” said Bramlett. “We’ve just been hanging out and enjoying it right here.”
