Replacement of the roof on the Klickitat County Fairgrounds' grandstand has been put off until next year.
The County Public Works Department, which operates the fairgrounds, put the roof replacement project out for bid this summer but didn't get any takers when it came time to open bids on Sept. 4.
County Commissioners will carry the estimated $175,000 capital improvement project over and try again in 2013.

vacant nursing home
for search & rescue
Klickitat County Sheriff Rick McComas told County Commissioners on Sept. 11 that the board of directors of Klickitat County Search & Rescue (SAR) is considering an offer to use the defunct Mt. Adams Care Center in Goldendale as a SAR training and storage center.
According to McComas, owners of the property have offered the former nursing home to the SAR board, which he said is exploring how SAR might use it for training and storage of equipment and vehicles. Moreover, McComas said his office would like to use a piece of the property for a vehicle impound yard.
The property, on which a long, boarded-up, single-story building sits, is located along Simcoe Drive.
McComas last year asked the County Commissioners to consider buying the property and on Sept. 11 encouraged them to include the facility's acquisition in the 2013 budget.
On Sept. 4, the county board held a discussion about the old nursing home with its Public Works Department. Commissioners inquired about the feasibility of remodeling the facility versus razing it and building new. They were told, for starters, that an asbestos analysis would be required and could cost $30,000 to $50,000.
Chip sealing program
continues with rental
The chip spreader Klickitat County uses in its seal-coating program broke down with more than $600,000 worth of work still to be done, County Engineer Gordon Kelsey told County Commissioners on Sept. 11.
Kelsey advised the Commissioners that the equipment would be out of commission for the rest of the season. He said Skamania County's chip spreader was available for rental and recommended they enter into an interlocal agreement with their neighbors to the west.
That same day the county board signed the agreement to rent a chip spreader from Skamania County to complete Klickitat County's 2012 seal coat maintenance program. The agreement is effective Sept. 12, 2012 through Sept. 12, 2015.
