The world champion Florida Marlins Monday made Columbia High School senior Brandon Verley their 15th pick in Major League Baseball's 2004 amateur draft.
Verley, 18, was the third high school player selected by Florida and the draft's 458th pick overall, according to Baseball America.
The Marlins listed Verley's projected position as outfielder. One scouting report compared Verley's 6-foot-2, 200-pound build to that of the Milwaukee Brewers' Geoff Jenkins.
"Athletic build with good definition...Excellent physical projections. Thick through shoulders, arms. Strong calves. Avid in weight room," the report noted.
The report also took note of Verley's hitting approach and swing, which produced a .639 batting average and nine home runs during his senior season.
"Upright, spread stance. Good rhythm, trigger in approach. Level, compact swing. Power to all fields. Speed more apparent on open bases. Soft hands. Hard worker. Instincts to hit with solid approach. Good swing will translate to home run power. Plays up to better pitching, competition," the report summarized.
Those are the same attributes that led Washington State University to offer Verley an athletic scholarship. Last fall, Verley signed a national letter-of-intent to play baseball at WSU.
