After two years of planning and preparation, the Dallesport station of Skyline Hospital Ambulance opened Nov. 1, 2003.
In addition to providing ambulance service to the Dallesport vicinity, other areas such as Lyle, Appleton, Klickitat and High Prairie will benefit as well by having quicker response times.
The Dallesport area was selected for this endeavor by taking into account mutual aid to The Dalles, Goldendale, and White Salmon areas.
Through grants, fundraisers and volunteer labor, the Dallesport community constructed the building to house the ambulance and two-person crew.
Skyline Hospital, supported in part by the EMS levy, is providing 24-hour medical personnel, along with the ambulance and emergency equipment. Six additional persons have been hired -- three paramedics and three EMTs to man the new station.
"We want to become a part of the community," stated David Nice, Skyline Ambulance manager. "I have encouraged my staff to drive around, meet people, and generally become acquainted with the area. We hope to become involved in the school, and be available at public events. After the first of the year, we will be offering public First Aid and CPR classes."
"If you have a medical emergency, call 9-1-1. The new ambulance station should not be misconstrued for an urgent care clinic. Much of the time, the ambulance crew will not be physically in the building, but they are always available by radio," emphasized Nice.
On Dec. 20, 2003 from 1 to 5 p.m., the public is invited to an open house in Dallesport to meet the ambulance crews and become acquainted with the new facility and services.
