Due to lack of news we just added history this week.
Churches in Lyle are United Methodist, 403 Klickitat St. and Lyle Celebration Center, 715 Washington St.
Taken from the History of Klickitat County, published by Klickitat County Historical Society in 1982: "The spring of 1932 saw another move, to Fisher Hill and to school at Lyle, Phillip graduated from Lyle High School in 1935."
"H.G. and Ida Tuthill continued to raise their family in the Lyle area and made their home there until they passed away each at the age of 77. They are buried in Balch Cemetery near Lyle. After helping W.H. Thompson and Art Thompson with their hay, Phillip took a job with Ernie Struck, which lasted five years. He also cut wood by hand, selling it in Lyle for $7.00 a cord and paying Bill Cody, Sr. $3.00 to haul it to town. That cash bought school clothes and little more."
"In 1937 Klickitat County sold tax foreclosure land at 50 cents an acre and up. Even at those prices Phillip was able to buy only 78 acres, but it gave him a start. The Depression still had a pretty good hold on Klickitat County in 1940. Phillip mowed hay for 50 cents an acre and did other custom work to help pay for the first tractor, mower and plow he had bought."
No one has more driving ambition than the boy who wants to buy a car.
