It's a tremendous milestone to reach 100 years old, and now the city of White Salmon has reached that marker.
This has been a pleasant and vibrant community since the beginning, and remains so today. We owe a debt of gratitude to the many pioneer families who came here and built this city, and to the many citizens and community leaders who have helped keep the town on an even keel over the many decades since White Salmon was incorporated in 1907.
It's great that a group of 13 citizens created the White Salmon Centennial Committee and put together a variety of events and displays to honor our shared heritage. The slogan this group of volunteers came up with is a wonderful one, and truly says it all: "Honor the past; celebrate the present; envision the future."
The Aug. 11 "birthday" celebration the committee members planned and successfully executed reminds us again of how this community was built and prospered over the years: through hard work, creative concepts, and a willingness of citizens to volunteer a very precious resource -- their time -- for a worthy cause.
The area's early settlers -- and the many business, political, and community leaders who followed them -- all seemed to realize what we realize even now: White Salmon is a great place to live and work.
