This week’s beautiful weather helps make rainy September fade into our memories. Doug Daniels, who measured and recorded rainfall for the National Weather Service for over 40 years reported a few interesting facts about our rainy September, 2013. For the past 17 years, Doug has tracked monthly precipitation figures. Prior to 2013, September rainfall for the past 17 years totaled 10.28 inches; and averaged 6/10 inch for each September. The highest September rainfall was 2.7 inches in 1997. Wellllll…this September’s accumulation changed the average and high by a long shot. In Glenwood, we received 5.45 inches of rainfall this September changing the cumulative average to .87 inches. Rainfall during this September was over half of the last 17 years cumulative total; and twice the previous high from 1997! Thanks for sharing those figures with us, Doug! Kind of makes you wonder what kind of a winter is in store for us!?!

With our current elected officials playing politics and denying access to veteran’s memorial, etc., it is refreshing that our local Glenwood Homemakers are honoring veterans. They are gathering items that make our veterans’ lives a little easier or more enjoyable. Items that would be appropriate include: individually wrapped snack packages of chips, crackers and cookies, microwave popcorn, bottled water, O’Douls or Coors non-alcoholic beer, soda pop (both diet and regular), wireless headsets for TV, portable table top CD players, universal TV remote controls (the more simple…the better), new electric razors, DVD/VCR players (combination only), documentary DVDs, wall clocks, space storage bags, Poligrip, toothpaste, Forever postage stamps, Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Skin Therapy lotion, sweat shirts and sweat pants from size medium to 4XL, and remote-controlled cars. If you would like to donate an item or items for the veterans, please call Jeanie at 364-4167 or Laurene at 364-3495; and they will be happy to pick up your donation(s). Herman and Jeanie Kuhnhausen will deliver the gifts to The Dalles Veterans’ Home on Nov. 11. The Glenwood Homemakers have gathered items for the veterans in The Dalles several other times – and the items have been greatly appreciated!
