The battle for Greater Columbia B League girls basketball playoff berths began last weekend with early-season games in both the Klickitat County and Yakima Valley divisions.
Winners during the GCB's opening weekend of play were Bickleton, La Salle, Mabton, Riverside Christian and Sunnyside Christian.
At Mabton 54, Klickitat 25 --
The Vandals shot 45 percent from the floor but suffered 38 turnovers last Saturday in their lopsided loss to the Vikings.
Klickitat had trouble with Mabton's on-ball pressure all night and finished with just nine field goals in 20 attempts.
Sophomore Aryn Davis (4/6 shooting) led the Vandals (0-1, 2-3) with 12 points and seven of their 19 rebounds.
At Sunnyside Christian 69, Lyle 23 -- The Knights rolled to a 36-7 halftime lead on their way to the GCB victory last Saturday.
Lyle's best quarter was the fourth when it scored 14 points.
Senior Tara Rappe led the Cougars (0-2, 0-6) with nine points
Bickleton 44, at Lyle 34 --
The Pirates outscored the Cougars, 17-0, in the first quarter last Friday on their way to their fourth win of the season.
Bickleton's Annie Hess led all scorers with 23 points, and Kirstin Slater added 11 for the Pirates (1-0, 4-1).
Tara Rappe had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Lyle, which trailed 29-16 at halftime but pulled within 33-28 at the end of three quarters.
Jessica Struck chipped in 10 rebounds and seven points for the Cougars.
Klickitat 40, at Arlington, Ore. 38 --
Senior Andrea Justman's two free throws with 33 seconds remaining last Friday lifted the Vandals to the non-league road win.
Klickitat improved to 2-2 overall, winning a game that was close throughout: 10-10 after one quarter, 22-19 at halftime and 33-30 after three.
Sophomore Aryn Davis led Klickitat with 10 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks.
Justman (3/4 free throws) added seven points and had 12 of the Vandals' 39 rebounds, and junior Sherri Brewer (5/8 field goals) contributed 10 points.
Glenwood 32, Stevenson JV 23 --
The Eagles improved to 2-4 with the Dec. 14 home-court victory over the Bulldogs jayvee.
Glenwood's Ashley Brasuell led all scorers with 11 points. Courtney Dudley's 10 points paced Stevenson.
Samantha Sutterlict added seven points for Glenwood on 7-of-12 shooting from the foul line, and Stacey Ruland and Ashley Woodward each chipped in four points.
Klickitat 52, at Horizon Christian 17 --
The Vandals picked up their first win of the season, defeating the Hawks, 52-17, in non-league action Dec. 14 at Wy'East Middle School in Odell.
Klickitat (1-2) held its Hood River opponent scoreless in the first quarter during which sophomore Aryn Davis scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter to help Klickitat establish a commanding 23-0 advantage.
Klickitat's lead at halftime was 41-4.
Sophomore Melissa Huwe contributed 10 points to the winning effort, including six on a pair of first-quarter 3-pointers.
Senior Andrea Justman led the Vandals on the boards, finishing with 11 rebounds. Davis had rebounds.
Senior Deidra Clack was solid all-around, posting a stat line of seven points (2 of 4 from the floor, 3 of 3 from the line), five assists and four steals.
Klickitat's team stat line included 30 rebounds, 14 steals, nine assists and a 44-percent mark from the field (22/50).
