The Gorge's starry skies are the envy of all astronomers west of the Cascades. On Friday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m., experience "Astronomy Night at the Museum" with OMSI astronomer and educator Dan Gerhards at the Discovery Center in The Dalles.
Explaining the universe is no easy task. Using spectacular NASA imagery, comedic mythology skits, interactive dialogue, and (weather permitting), an educational sky tour, Gerhards strives to bring the wonders of the cosmos a bit closer to home.
"First, I will give a virtual tour of the solar system, and show how the Earth fits into the larger universe. Then we'll examine the findings of the latest space probe missions, and photos from large telescopes around the world. After that, you get to choose the topics: black holes, space tourism, the Big Bang--anything is fair game. Bring your questions!" said Gerhards.
He added, "Later, if the weather is good, we'll step outside for a constellation tour and telescope time. If not, I will perform some of the mythology behind the constellations, so you can see them in an entirely different way."
Gerhard's talent as a scientific entertainer is documented by thousands of visitors to OMSI's Hancock Field Station each year. His website, spacemandan.net, is a good resource for astronomers of all levels.
The program is free to museum members; $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $3 for kids 6-16. Volunteers with telescopes to share receive complimentary admission, and are encouraged to pre-register with Roxie at 541-296-8600 ext. 215.
