The public is invited to offer comments at a hearing on the proposed exchange of trust lands within Klickitat County.
"We want the public to be a part of this important discussion," said Commissioner of Public Lands Doug Sutherland. "This exchange is to prepare for the transfer of land to add acreage to the Trout Lake Natural Area Preserve (NAP), one of the highest quality wetland ecosystems in the state. We want the public to continue to be a part of this process as we all make choices about the long-term best use of state lands for the people of Washington."
The public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, at Trout Lake School in Trout Lake.
Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff will provide information and receive testimony on the proposed exchange.
This proposed intra-departmental exchange is to trade trust designations on roughly 560 acres of Forest Board Transfer and Normal School trust lands for about 840 acres of Common School trust lands, all within Klickitat County.
A summary of testimony will be presented to the Board of Natural Resources at a regularly scheduled meeting for evaluation and potential approval.
Lands exchanged for Forest Board Transfer trust and Normal School trust would remain as trust lands in state ownership. Forest Board lands in Klickitat County provide revenue for county services and the state general fund, and Normal School trust lands pay for construction at several Washington universities.
Written comments are due by Aug. 15, and should be sent to: Department of Natural Resources, Attn: Intra-departmental Exchange No. 86-073847, P.O. Box 47014, Olympia, Wash., 98504-7014.
