The Portland office of Kennedy/Jenks Consultants is a finalist in the American Council of Engineering Companies' 36th annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition for helping Klickitat County develop an innovative approach that collects, treats and discharges effluent from the Dallesport Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The project is one of 155 finalists that will be judged by a panel. All winners and finalists will be recognized at a banquet in Washington D.C., on March 12.
Last year, Klickitat County's plans to construct a new sewer system for the Dallesport were complicated by the selected building site's location within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, and the proximity of several Native American cultural sites.
Kennedy/Jenks conducted a study of the alternatives and recommended an innovative approach that utilizes a variety of treatment methods, including ultraviolet disinfection.
Along with routing safe, high-quality water to the river to help replenish stream flows for salmon, the system can be implemented without underwater construction, saving the county tax dollars.
