The second time was the charm for Mayor David Poucher's effort to have an independent auditor review the operations of two city departments and suggest ways to make improvements.
On Oct. 7, the White Salmon City Council voted 4-0 to authorize the audit of the Public Works Department and City Hall's financial processes, which will cost the city between $2,500-$3,000.
The proposed audit had been defeated by the council in a 2-1 vote on Sept. 16. Although two council members -- Brad Roberts and Mark Peppel -- supported the measure, it failed due to a parliamentary requirement: The measure needed at least three votes in support to gain passage.
Two of the five City Council members had been absent for the Sept. 16 vote, while council member Richard Marx voted against the proposed audit.
Marx explained at the time that he voted against the audit because of its cost during a time when the city's budget is already dealing with deep cuts.
