Two missed shots in the last seven seconds of play--one for the win, one for the tie--sealed Columbia High's 71-69 defeat by Trico Division opponent Kalama here last Friday.
The underdog Bruins (0-10 in Trico, 5-13 overall) had pulled within two points when Darnell Douglas converted two free throws with nine seconds remaining.
After calling time out, CHS fouled Kalama's Robby Sanders on the ensuing inbounds play. But Sanders missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Columbia rebounded and called time out again.
The Bruins inbounded the ball from near halfcourt to Taylor Champion, whose 3-point try from the right wing was short. Jared McDonald got the rebound but his hurried shot from 5 feet was long at the buzzer.
For the Bruins, it was a hardluck finish to a game they worked so hard to win.
"Against Kalama, the team played hard," Bruins Coach Scott Kasenga. "I really think we played well enough to deserve a win."
Down 33-26 at the start of the second half, Columbia outscored Kalama (8-2, 13-6) 23-19 in the third quarter.
Kent Shelley sparked the turnaround, scoring 11 of his team-high 21 points in the period that ended with a 12-4 CHS run.
The junior forward continued to have the hot hand early in the fourth quarter, netting four points in a row--two on a basket after Greg Tellez saved the ball at the baseline and two on free throws--that tied the game at 55.
A moment later, Douglas stole the ball and drove for a layin that put CHS on top for the first time since the first quarter.
Columbia's last lead came at the 5:07 mark, on a basket by McDonald that gave CHS a 61-59 edge.
The Chinooks countered the Bruins' attack with six straight points: a 3-pointer by Sanders and a 3-point play by Jeff Vossen. Kalama eventually extended its lead to 69-64 on a 3-point shot by Nick Schmit (24 points) with 1:13 to go.
But Douglas, who had nine of his 17 points in the final quarter, brought the Bruins back one last time with a 3-pointer and two free throws that cut the Chinooks' lead to 71-69.
A key difference in the outcome was 3-point shooting. Kalama netted 18 points from downtown versus six by Columbia. That plus-12 differential more than offset CHS's 17-7 advantage at the foul line.
