Columbia High cooled off the hottest team in the Trico League, shutting out Stevenson 12-0 in five innings here Monday afternoon beÿhind the one-hit pitching of sophoÿmore Eric Crause.
The right-hander struck out five and walked two, and received errorÿless defensive support in running his record to 4-0.
The Bruins (8-5, 9-5) got after the Bulldogs (8-5, 8-7) early, scorÿing seven runs in their first at-bat.
Senior Derek Yeager had two hits of CHS' six hits and knocked
in two runs from the cleanup spot.
Junior Bryan Charters scored two runs and drove in two with a fourth-inning double. Junior Adam Hogberg had two runs batted in, one coming home on a sacrifice fly.
"That win was a big one for us. We got what we needed when we needed it," Bruins Coach Larry McCutcheon said. "We didn't make an error and we got another well-pitched game from Eric."
The victory ended Stevenson's six-game winning streak at six, extended CHS' to two games and
avenged a 9-4 loss to Stevenson on April 17 at Carson.
Columbia led that game 2-0 but gave up five runs in the third and another in the fourth to fall behind 6-2.
Junior Hayden Weiler went 2 for 3 with a run-scoring double for CHS. Yeager had two runs batted in, and freshman Brandon Verley had two hits and two stolen bases.
The Bruins' losing streak reached two games when they dropped the first game of a Trico double-header here Friday with Washougal.
A five-run second inning, highÿlighted by senior Peter Hughes' grand slam, sparked the Panthers to their first league victory in nine outings.
Yeager belted his first varsity homer in game one -- a two-run blast in the fifth -- to trim the Panthers' lead to 7-5.
Columbia didn't get any long balls in game two but it got a complete game from junior right-
hander Chris Peck to defeat Waÿshougal 4-2.
Peck scattered seven hits and yielded single runs in the first and seventh innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.
Junior Paul Courtney put CHS on top 3-1 with a two-run double -- his only hit of the game -- in the second inning. Verley and Peck each connected for two hits and scored a run.
The results of recent action leave Columbia tied for third place with Stevenson, but CHS holds the tieÿbreaker having won the season series 2-1.
And, with five league games to go, the Bruins still are in contention for the Trico championship, though Castle Rock and Ridgefield, with fewer losses, remain the front-runÿners.
"We could finish anywhere from fourth to first. We control our own destiny and we start Friday with a double-dip at Ridgefield," McCutÿcheon noted.
