The public is invited to a presentation by local botanist, Krista Thie, on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. in the White Salmon Valley Community Library's Sprint/Baker Gallery.
The topic of the talk will be "Ethnobotany: The Relationship Between Plants and People of the Northwest."
Focusing on the traditional plant lore of the Columbia River Gorge, Thie will use plant samples, photographs, books, and her personally recommended bibliography to help attendees understand the vital role plants have played in the lives of the people of the gorge.
Plants have enhanced many fields of science (including medicine, agriculture and technology). Thie will highlight the important roles plants play in our everyday lives from flax for linen to yew trees for chemotherapy.
Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Library.
Thie, who has studied native plants of the Columbia River Gorge for more than 20 years, has a bachelor of science in botany from the University of Washington and was a research assistant to Eugene Hunn for his book Nch'i-wana, "The Big River": Mid-Columbia Indians and Their Land.
