Both of White Salmon's Gorge Youth Football League teams put up good fights in season-opening games last Saturday in Hood River.
The Black Knights, thanks to a strong running game and a stingy defense, kept their game against Hood River Gold close but came up on the short end of a 12-7 final score.
Ryan Aldrich ran for 84 yards and White Salmon's lone touchdown, Tristen Bond gained 92 and R.J. Hicks added 77 for the Black Knights.
Other standouts on offense included Keifer Kreps and Cam Wang, and linemen Hobie Contreras and Colton Rumsey.
"The offense played well but just didn't capitalize on a couple of scoring opportunities," coaches Pat Bond and Kelly Kreps noted in their weekly report.
Outstanding defenders for White Salmon included Doug Franklin and Nick Engram on the line, and Aldrich, Kreps and Hicks all over the field. Aldrich led the team with nine tackles and Kreps tallied six.
At Hood River Green 14, White Salmon Red 6:
Shane Walker ran for a touchdown and almost 100 yards, and Blake Walker picked up another 36 on the ground in the Red Raiders' loss.
Coaches Bond and Kreps said White Salmon enjoyed much of its success on the ground running behind the lead blocks of linemen Chase Ogden and Bubba Demchuk.
On the defensive side of the ball, Tanner Rabinowitz, Kyler Riggleman, Derion Jacobs, Isaac Bell and Blake Walker all had outstanding games. Rabinowitz led the way with 12 tackles.
Coming Up:
The Red Raiders (0-1) and the Black Knights (0-1) are back in action this Saturday, when they play their home openers as part of a YFL triple-header at Bruin Stadium.
The 9 a.m. game pits Stevenson against Hood River Gold. At 10:30, the Red Raiders will take on Hood River Blue. That'll be followed by a matchup between the Black Knights and Hood River White that kicks off at noon.
