Columbia High's track and field teams continued their dominance of invitational meets with victories last Friday at the Panther Invitational in Washougal.
The CHS boys have won three invitationals in a row now, edging La Center's and Fort Vancouver's boys, 73-69-68.5, in an eight-team field that included three Class 3A schools and an entry from Burnaby, B.C.
The majority of CHS's points -- 45 -- came in running events.
Senior Adam Neff was victorious in all three sprints and sophomore Wes Blankenship finished first in two of the three throws to pace the Bruins.
Neff won the 100 in 11.14 seconds, the 200 in 22.65 and the 400 in 49.75. He broke 23 seconds in the 200 for the second straight meet and ran his third consecutive sub-50 400.
Blankenship set personal records in the shot put and discus with winning throws of 46 feet, 2 inches and 156 feet, 6 inches, respectively.
Junior Brett Schutt tallied second-place points in the pole vault, clearing 12-6, and the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 43.15.
In relay events, the Bruins placed third in the 4x100 (45.22; winning time, 44.02, Burnaby Central) and sixth in the 4x400 (3:48.82; winning time, 3:40.25, La Center).
Columbia High's girls claimed team victory at an invitational for the second meet in a row.
Led by senior Kristin Janney's three first-place finishes, the Bruins scored 61 points in running events and 39 in field events for a meet-high 100 points.
La Center nipped Fort Vancouver, 94-93, for second place in final team standings.
Janney posted victories in the 100 (13.09), the long jump (15-3) and the triple jump (33-5.75).
In the 100, Janney beat LC's Bridgette Sexton by a tenth of a second for the win. Janney's mark in the triple was her best effort of the season.
Junior Alexa Williams also contributed to CHS's point total in field events, winning the high jump at 5-2.
She and Janney also figured in the first-place finish by Columbia's 4x200 relay team (1:49.69).
The Bruins took second in the 4x100 (53.25; winning time, 53.19, Fort Vancouver) and third in the 4x400 (4:43.66; winning time, 4:27.53, La Center).
CHS athletes adding to the team's running total included Abby Zuck in the 200 (3rd, 27.28); Jeni Stembridge (5th, 1:04.61) in the 400; Anna Zuck (6th, 2:53.66) in the 800; Zuck (2nd, 14:07.3) and Jessica Emanuele (4th, 15:40.06) in the 3200; Whitney Shelley (5th, 6:27.75) in the 1600; and Alycia Rohwer (4th, 52.16) in the 300 hurdles.
Columbia got shut out in the throwing events, though junior Krista Bakke put up PRs in the shot put and discus competitions.
