Travelers on State Route 14 in Skamania County should plan for daytime delays starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, while construction crews replace two aging culverts below the highway.
Crews will work in one location at a time, starting at Ice House Lake (Milepost 41) next week and moving to Cape Horn (MP 26) in mid-September.
Work requires single-lane closures and flagging, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drivers should expect 10-minute delays until the project is complete in October.
The 40-year-old culverts are cracking and showing other signs of weakness. The Washington State Department of Transportation and contractor Nutter Corporation will replace them to protect the integrity of SR 14 and maintain proper drainage under the roadway.
At Ice House Lake, crews will replace the aging corrugated metal pipe with heavy plastic pipe and reconstruct the lanes of SR 14. At Cape Horn, crews will install heavy plastic pipe inside the existing concrete box culvert.
This $375,000 project is funded by federal and state highway dollars.
