MORO – The Sherman Huskies scored their first touchdown and came close to two others in a 25-6 loss Friday at home versus Arlington-Condon.
With two minutes and 11 seconds left in the third quarter, Sherman quarterback Wade Fields found an open seam in the middle of the Honker defense for a 42-yard score, as that play erased a span of 129 minutes and 49 seconds without a touchdown.
Sherman also threatened on three different occasions, getting inside the 20, the 10 and five.
The first opportunity came on their second possession, as the Huskies drove the ball to the Honker nine, but could not convert a fourth and goal attempt.
Behind 10-0 with less than eight minutes left in the second quarter, Fields intercepted a pass and coasted 78 yards until falling at the one-yard line.
Two plays later, a fumbled handoff at the one was recovered by Arlington-Condon.
The Honkers led 18-0 at the half and had a 25-0 cushion at the 10-minute mark of the third period.
Caleb Fritts ended up with 17 tackles, two sacks, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt in the game, as the block setting up Sherman’s only score.
Late in the game, Sherman went on a 14-play, 43-yard drive and faced a fourth down and three from the Arlington-Condon 19, but could not connect on the ensuing passing play.
Fields completed 3 of 11 passes for seven yards and he rushed seven times for 74 yards and a score.
Senior fullback Tyler Jones reeled off 50 yards on the ground on 17 carries and caught three balls for seven yards, as Sherman wound up with 122 yards.
Arlington-Condon had 225 yards of offense, with Tyler Longacre totaled 126 yards rushing with a score, to go with one catch for 14 yards.
Wesley Goad Rushed for 61 yards on 15 rushing attempts and he completed 2 of 5 passes for 22 yards. Goad also kicked a 33-yard field and converted two extra point kicks. He missed short on a 53-yard field goal try in the fourth quarter.
The Huskies (0-3 overall, 0-2 league) look to end their three-game losing streak in a league tilt at Union Friday at 7 p.m.
